Medical Risk Management, LLC Releases Results of 3 Year Study on Physician Receptiveness and Effectiveness of Risks Management Rounds®

Friday, July 20, 2007: Monday, July 2, 2007 (HARTFORD, CT): In search of developing an educational venue that would engage physicians and other healthcare providers in risk management education Medical Risk Management LLC (MRM) [www.1mrm.com] created Risk Management Rounds (RMRs). Three years after introducing the program to hundreds of private practicing physicians and other providers, MRM has released the results of physician evaluations of the RMRs program. The results of the three year program, with over 650 participating physicians attending RMRs, are overwhelmingly positive.

Risk Management Rounds is a novel approach to risk management education that combines the techniques utilized in the conventional morbidity and mortality rounds (M&M) with those used in hospital "grand rounds." The "Grand Rounds" approach incorporates selected cases from physician offices and hospital settings focused on specific medical liability/patient safety areas. The case studies presented are carefully developed to simulate actual situations that the physician or clinical specialist would be exposed to. Participants conclude each session with “risk management takeaways” that they can incorporate into their daily activities.

“Whereas, traditional M&Ms are focused exclusively on adverse outcomes and claims filed, and Grand Rounds sessions tend to focus on new and innovative treatment and diagnosis techniques. RMRs are preemptive in nature, allowing providers to learn from actual legal case studies presented in a stimulating interactive environment. These are real cases that have been redacted for confidentiality purposes. All patient charts, phone logs, lab results, after hours call notes, nurse triage documentation, etc have been scanned in and chronologically synchronized with the case discussion that is jointly facilitated by a seasoned medical malpractice defense attorney and a practicing clinician,” stated Joyce Lagnese JD a partner at MRM. Attorney Lagnese went on to say “We did not imagine the overwhelmingly positive evaluation feedback from the physicians. Over 99% responded that the RMR sessions were worth their time and over 92% said that these sessions should be offered annually.”

The recently released RMR evaluation study (n=>650physician/physician extenders) include the following responses to these questions:
Question: YES NO
1. Was RMR Session worth your time? 99% 1%
2. Should RMRs be held annually? 92% 8%
3. Were the cases relevant to your practice? 97% 3%
4. Were the cases presented clearly? 98% 2%
5. Are there risk management interventions that
could be implemented at your office that would
Mitigate some of the exposures discussed? 93% 6%
6. Would you change your practice as a result of
What you learned at this session? 94% 6%
7. Of the 94% respondents that indicated that they
would change their practice as a result of what they
learned at RMRs, to what degree would they change
their practice? 70% 25% 5%
Somewhat Mostly Completely

Yes No

“Perhaps the most powerful message from our RMR evaluation study is that over 94% of the clinicians who participated said that they would change their practice as a result of what they learned during the Risk Management Rounds session. This confirms that the RMR educational venue is not only viewed as interesting and stimulating to the physician participants but more importantly, the session motivates physicians to make positive changes in their practices,” stated Neil Danaher JD a partner at MRM.

RMR Overall Goals:
1. to increase the participant's awareness of clinical/administrative practices which are risk prone;
2. to identify best practices and vulnerable practices; and
3. to effect appropriate changes in behavior/processes.

“The evaluation results over three years confirm that we have achieved our goals,” said Kelly. “Our next step is to expand the RMR process to a broader base of physicians and hospitals to assist them in improving patient safety and reducing professional medical liability exposures.”

Risk Management Rounds sessions have been custom designed to address specific high exposure areas by specialty or within specific hospital settings (i.e. OB/GYN, Emergency Room, Delivery Suite etc.).
